Rad to the power of Awesome! Generation X reinvents the Roller disco. by Greg Barnes
Picture the scene. An outrageous blaring Punk band standing in the middle of a converted warehouse space in the bohemian Melbourne suburb of Brunswick, surrounded by one of the most intense circle pits ever witnessed by mankind. The core of the pit was filled with die hard team Rad fans thrashing back and fourth to the sound of traditional skate punk lyrics and Metal influenced power chords. The outer sphere of moshers were mounted on war beasts designed for speed and Thrashing. Bmx bikes, Skateboards, low rider pushies, roller skates, snapped skateboards with a truck attached to each foot, trolleys, wheelie bins and every other manner of motor-less wheeled vehicle. The general rule of thumb in this pit was to never let your guard down. If the fury of mosh was a little too much to handle, then backing out would put you at risk of standing right in the line of a skateboard mid Ollie or bike locked into a full speed manual! The set consisted of team Rad classics such as ‘Eye of the dead faced rodent’, ‘kick each others heads off’ and ‘porno afterbirth’. As daylight broke through the elongated windows the next morning, evidence of the carnage truly sunk in. the streaky black marks of 20 inch bicycle tyres coated the walls and the surface of the floor was sticky from a serious coating of booze and polyurethane skid marks!
Look out for the music issue of Rebel Yell available late October for a full interview with the absurdity that is Team ‘fckn’ Rad.
